Maties Sport
The nostalgia that comes with being a Matie is very special – there is only fond memories of summer nights at the Danie Craven Stadium, cheering on the maroon machine, or the fast-paced action of basketball and netball in the Coetzenburg Centre, not to mention record-breaking moments at the historic Coetzenburg Stadium.
Coetzenburg is the heart of Stellenbosch University, regardless of whether or not you played a sport. Your presence on game nights or virtually, through the many online events, is imperative to grow the legacy that has been shaped over 100 years.
Today, Maties Sport offers 30 codes – 11 of them high performance – to around 3 000 student athletes and continues to serve as the nurturing ground for excellence in coaching, sport innovation and national champions.
During the unprecedented circumstances of the last two years, Maties Sport emerged as a leader among South African universities by embracing technology to move online with coaching sessions across codes, webinars, and national competitions.
In 2022, the return to action will be fast and furious once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and we hope to welcome fans back into our famous stadiums. So, stay connected with Maties Sport to update your calendar and to celebrate your maroon pride – and remember always to #gooimielies!
Don’t miss out on the action
Maties Sport has a wide and varied network of followers on social media. Like and follow us to ensure that you stay up to date on who is excelling in which sport, what team is topping the logs, who is flying the flag for South Africa and, of course, all the fixtures of your favourite sport.
In addition, you may want to join one of our many online gatherings to hear from experts in their field and to take part in the general conversation surrounding university sport and your alma mater in particular. We love hearing from you, so feel free to share your comments, photos, and stories with us. After all, you are our inspiration and … once a Matie, always a Matie.
Raring to go!
To say that the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the world of sport in 2020/2021 is an understatement. Sadly, its effects are being felt into 2022 and at the time of going to print, Maties Sport’s 30 codes remain uncertain of competition dates and venues – and even if they will actually take place.
Hopefully, fixtures will be confirmed by governing sporting bodies by the end of the first quarter, enabling our talented student athletes to get back out into the field of play, delight their fans and make Stellenbosch University proud. 66 ALUMNI CALENDAR 2022.
