Announcing the nominees for the Convocation member vacancy on the SU Council: Voting starts 28 August 2023
Nominations to fill the vacancy for a Convocation member on the SU Council closed on 20 August. These are the names of the nominees:
Mr Jan Naude de Villiers
As a 4th generation Matie and father, I would like to play my part in ensuring that my own children, as well as those of my fellow alumni, have access to the same world class education that I received, but also the same unique social and campus culture that make our US so unique. I support a US vision of global excellence in research and education, in combination with a strengthening of inclusivity balanced with a preservation of existing campus culture that positively contributes to the unique offering of the US.

Prof Joan Hambidge
My mission statement entails the support of a multilingual university and the recognition of different cultures within a complex continent. Decolonization of the curriculum within an African context implies a revisiting of knowledge and should not be seen as as a lowering of standard. Only when we recognise the unique nature of our history we will be able to compete internationally. The unique history of the Afrikaans language, with European and African roots, is something we can offer. I will prioritise gender rights.

Dr Trunette Renee Joseph
My vision is to promote Stellenbosch as Africa's leading research-intensive university, framed by the university's transformative Vision 2040, its vision, mission, values, and Code 2040 Pledge. I will do this by honouring the Convocation mandate entrusted onto me by ensuring members are consulted and their voices heard through dialogue and engagement, to strengthen and enhance the SU Council governance and oversight of the academic project. Central to my vision is a transforming, accountable, transparent and ethical approach, manifesting my respect for members' rights to ensure their valuable, expert inputs reflect, and are taken into consideration, at Council level.

My vision is that of an active network of alumni that is strong, diverse and united in the vision of making a positive impact in society, exceeding expectations, accountable and answerable for our role in building an
African continent that is inclusive and globally competitive. I believe our role as convocation is to demonstrate the values, history and traditions of the institution through our contribution to society. I have the capacity, skill and experience to deliver on this vision and I am mindful of the responsibility we must discharge to influence the trajectory of our commitment.

Mr Johan Acker Smit
I am a Christian, a patriotic South African and an experienced executive and businessman that understands the importance of sound values and accountability in order to sustain excellent organisations. Regrettably, the University of Stellenbosch reflects all the characteristics of another declining institution. This cannot be allowed. I stand by and will fight for strong leadership and accountability, merit, equal opportunities and the retention and expansion of Afrikaans as a language of instruction, while not ignoring the importance of tradition in sustaining world class universities. Let us work together to make the University of Stellenbosch great again!
