Thursday, 24 September 2020 is National Heritage Day for South Africans – a day when we celebrate our culture and our diversity of beliefs and traditions.
Nothing about 2020 since COVID-19 has been normal, but that does not mean we cannot celebrate what is important to us in a way that is quintessentially South African, so let us BRAAI!
This year we are mindful of the global COVID-19 pandemic and do not want to unnecessarily place any of our Maties in harm’s way. Maties Come Braai with Me 2020 will be slightly different to how we did it last year.
We want to encourage you to have a BRAAI over the weekend of 25–27 September. Let’s celebrate with a Heritage Weekend!
We will not be arranging any other Maties to come braai with you, BUT we are encouraging you to do the following:
Buy South African, coz local is lekker!
We ask that you buy a bottle or two of South African wine to enjoy with your braai.
•In the first two months of the ban on alcohol sales and exports in South Africa, 80 wineries and 350 producers have gone out of business and 18 000 workers in the wine industry have lost their jobs.
Our links as a university and as Maties to the wine industry in South Africa go back more than 100 years. Training in viticulture and oenology was already offered in the 1880s at the former Stellenbosch Gymnasium (one of our names before becoming a university). Formal teaching in the Department of Viticulture and Oenology of the Faculty of Agriculture was started by Professor AI Perold, who is widely regarded as the father of Pinotage!
Stellenbosch University is also the only university in Africa to make its own wine.
