#Move4Food: Tackling Student Hunger Together
“Not knowing where your next meal will come from is a reality for many South Africans, including university students. Food insecurity at South African universities often goes unnoticed due to the misconception that university students are privileged and have their basic needs met.”
— Karen Bruns, Senior Director: Development & Alumni Relations
The Campaign
The #Move4Food fundraising campaign was launched in August 2018 with the goal of raising funds to help sustain the food security initiatives at Stellenbosch University (SU). Together with the student leadership, we have implemented various actions to tackle food insecurity on our campus in this student-led fundraising campaign to change the picture of student hunger at SU.
Continuing the Campaign
Initially intended to run from 2019 to 2021, the campaign remains active due to the ongoing need for food support among students. As part of the Bridge the Gap (BTG) initiative, #Move4Food continues to raise awareness, reduce stigma around hunger, and bring the university community together to support students in need.
Impact and Achievements
- R2 million raised since 2018 through donor contributions.
- 223 students were supported in 2021 with R261,250 in food allowances.
- Cash allowances ranged between R500–R900, with some students receiving multiple rounds of support.
- The Tygerberg Pantry Project, established in 2015, provides essential food and toiletries to students on the Tygerberg campus.
