Pre-Alumni
Pre-Alumni Programme
The Maties Pre-Alumni Programme is aimed at supporting current students through career networking, mentorship opportunities and thought-provoking engagement. The Matie journey starts the day you set foot on campus as a first year. The Development and Alumni Relations Division has created its Pre-Alumni programme to introduce young students to the global alumni network that awaits once they graduate.
Through this programme, DAR presents career networking and mentorship opportunities, that help young Maties to foster a lasting relationship with the university and generate a sense of pride and belonging. Alumni are urged to get involved in these activities by sharing your knowhow and wealth of knowledge.
Maroon Mondays
Monday 19 February
Join us at the Maties vs Pukke game for the launch of our 2024 #MaroonMondays campaign. This campaign aims to bring cohesion and a sense of community among our alumni and current students and staff to back our Varsity Cup team during the rugby season. #MaroonMondays involve alumni, current students as well as friends of the University watching the rugby matches at the Danie Craven stadium or from their homes and wearing their maroon Maties merchandise on Mondays to show their support for our team.
Careers Café
Thursday 9 May
Careers Café is a TED Talk-styled event where inspiring alumni share their life and career journeys with senior students. The talk is followed by a question-and-answer session allowing students to interact with the presenter.
Pre-Grad Day
Saturday 3 August
This annual day for students who are about to graduate focuses on work readiness. The programme discusses different aspects of life after graduation, including what to do when looking for work, how to look for a place to stay, and financial planning after having lived in a University residence.
Homecoming
12 – 14 September 2024
SU’s Homecoming and Family Weekend is an opportunity for alumni to revisit their alma mater, connect with old friends and experience the campus. We believe it is importance to establish Homecoming Weekend as an important event on alumni’s calendars. Our best chance to do that is by raising awareness of this initiative among pre-alumni while they are still on campus.
Giving Day
6 – 7 October 2022
In just 24 hours, the SU community will change the future of our students – and the world. Your donations will change students’ lives and make a difference to the causes that you are passionate about. Donate to a campaign that resonates with you or towards our Bridge the Gap Annual Fund. Change a life by creating opportunities. Activities will take the form of various and diverse games, such as spinathon, tree decoration alongside Victoria Street, walkathon, cycling, tennis, movie marathons and soccer matches.
Graduation Season
Monday 25 to Thursday 28 March and Monday 9 to Friday 13 December
Graduation is the last stage of a student’s university journey. It is a time to celebrate success and new beginnings as graduates are officially welcomed into the global Maties alumni network. Celebrations start at the graduation centre with a pin ceremony, followed by the alumni toast at the Alumni Clubhouse.
