Professor Thuli Madonsela, Director of the Chair for Social Justice at Stellenbosch University (SU), is all set to embark on a journey that goes beyond a physical endeavour. She will walk the well-known Pilgrimage of Hope, a 300 km route stretching from Stellenbosch to Cape Agulhas, to raise funds for #Action4Inclusion. This SU initiative aims to secure the registration of all students by eliminating their historical debts.
The Pilgrimage of Hope, a popular network of routes in the Western Cape, is not just a long walk, but a symbol of the epic struggle that many South African students face in their pursuit of education. The route traverses diverse landscapes and communities, adding an extra layer of significance to Madonsela’s cause.
The marathon walk begins on the weekend of 19 and 20 August and will continue for 13 consecutive days in October. The journey starts at 08:00 at the Rhenish church on the Braak in Stellenbosch, with Prof Thuli walking 15 km to Pniel on 20 August. On the following day, the journey resumes at 08:00 at the Pniel Museum to conclude at the farm La Provence near Franschhoek after another 20 km trek. This experience is presented in association with Visit Stellenbosch and the Pilgrimage of Hope.
We invite supporters and enthusiasts to join Prof Thuli and a group of inspiring leaders and entrepreneurs at the launch of this ambitious project. If you are interested in participating, you are welcome to do so on either day or both.
The participation fee is R600 per day, which includes logistical support, a hat, snacks and a traditional roosterkoek for lunch. Also, we provide return transfers to the starting point. Most importantly, a significant portion of the fee goes directly towards the #Action4Inclusion initiative.
Places are limited for both days, so we encourage you to book on Quicket early if you want to participate: scan the QR code on the promotional material.
Each step that Prof Madonsela takes on this journey will be a stride towards a future where all students, regardless of their financial circumstances, may fulfil their educational aspirations. #Action4Inclusion and the Pilgrimage of Hope testify to the power of collective action to resolve social justice issues in education.
