Dr Beryl Botman’s book, With(-Out) You shares the deeply personal story of how she coped with the sudden passing of her husband, former Vice- Chancellor and Rector of Stellenbosch University, Prof Russel Botman.
“It is the event that has had the most significant impact on my life. I needed to share the many lessons that I have learned from having to cope with the huge and sudden loss of my husband,” she says.
In 2014, some months after Prof Botman’s passing, Beryl completed her PhD in Education Policy Studies at SU and joined the University of the Free State as a post-doctoral research fellow at the then Institute for Reconciliation and Social Justice. During this period, she began work on various writing projects.
A request for a written epilogue to be included in a tribute book to Prof Botman pushed her into writing and encouraged her to produce her first book. Currently, she serves as Chair of the Russel Botman Bursary Fund and is a member of the committee that organises the Russel Botman Memorial Lecture.
