NOMINATIONS BY CONVOCATION OF STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY FOR THE ELECTION OF A COUNCIL MEMBER FOR THE TERM 11 September 2023 – 10 September 2027
In terms of clause 6(k) of the SU Statute, members of Convocation are hereby invited to submit nominations for the election of one member of Convocation to serve on Council for the term 11 September 2023 – 10 September 2027.
In pursuance of clause 7 of the Statute, the following requirements for nominees apply:
- A candidate must be a person with knowledge and experience relevant to the objects and governance of the University;
- A candidate may not already serve in another capacity on the Council;
- A candidate may not be 70 years or older on 11 September 2023;
- A candidate may not be an employee of, or student at SU; and
- No candidate may be a member of the Council of another institution of higher learning or be employed in a permanent executive managerial capacity at the level of, or equivalent to, a dean or higher by such an institution.
The onus is on the proposer, seconders and the nominees to ensure that the nominations are valid and aligned with the SU Statute (see Statute and approved Institutional Rules: Convocation), and that due consideration is given to representation with regard to race, gender and disability.
A nomination form is available on the Convocation webpage. Nominations are open for 30 (thirty) days between Friday, 21 July 2023 and Sunday, 20 August 2023 (23:59). No late nominations will be accepted. Failure to comply with all stipulations will result in disqualification of a nomination.
A member must be nominated for election by one (1) proposer, and four (4) other members must second the nomination. The nomination must be submitted on the prescribed nomination form, and must include a vision statement of no more than 100 words. The inclusion of a CV is optional. Nominations must be submitted via e-mail to elections@sun.ac.za on or before the closing date of Sunday, 20 August 2023 (23:59).
According to clause 47(1) of the Statute (2019), all persons on whom a qualification has been conferred at a congregation of the University, as well as the rector, vice-rectors, chief operating officer, full-time academic staff of the University, and former full-time academic staff of the University who left the service of the University on account of their having reached retirement age are members of Convocation and eligible to be nominated to serve on the SU Council if they comply with the requirements in clause 7 of the Statute. Members as listed in clause 47(1) of the Statute may act as a proposer or second a nomination.
